Dr. Tyler Dearden started his veterinary career as a high school co-op student in 1992 in his hometown of Courtice, Ontario. After a few years of formal education Tyler joined the team at Alta Vista Animal Hospital as an emergency veterinarian in 2003.
Tyler enjoys working with the emergency medicine team as he gets to see a range of cases and clients each and every day, each offering a unique challenge to overcome. Tyler feels fortunate to have a career that gives him the opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of the animals he meets, and the people who love them, sometimes in a very dramatic and very immediate way.
Tyler shares his house with three cats, a Siamese mix who came to AVAH after what was presumed to be an unfortunate incident with a moving vehicle, and "the kittens", a brother and sister combo, who were only supposed to stay a couple of weeks (3 years ago). Tyler hopes to add a miniature dachshund, "Scooter", to the clan in the near future.
Apart from his busy life at the clinic, Tyler's hobbies include photography, cooking, BBQing, working on and around his home, enjoying a glass of wine and spending time at the family cottage kayaking or just reading and relaxing.
Professional Bio
Tyler completed an undergraduate degree in Biochemistry @ McMaster University in 1998. From there he was admitted into the DVM programme at the Ontario Veterinary College (University of Guelph), where he graduated in 2003. Summers were spent with Health Canada working on various research projects.
He is presently working with Ottawa Paramedic and Police Canine units to improve emergent care of working dogs in the field.
