Athletes and cheerleaders alike had a great day with great weather for what has become an annual event for the hospitals. More than 45 staff members, friends and family joined together for breakfast following the race, and a chance to thaw out while prizes were awarded. Congrats to Sarah, Dan and Brandon, the fastest members for each leg (Running, skiing, skating) out of our group this year! Ottawa’s Police Dogs Are in Good Hands:

Ottawa Paramedic Service, Ottawa Police Canine Unit and Alta Vista Animal Hospital Join Forces in Education

May 31, 2011

Doctors Tyler Dearden and Erica Tyre along with 5 veterinary technicians from Alta Vista Animal Hospital came together with members of the Ottawa Paramedic Service and Ottawa Police Canine unit at the Paramedic headquarters on Don Reid Drive for a morning of education and demonstrations. This event was part of the ongoing relationship between the animal hospital and the paramedics.

The goal of the day was to introduce the group of 30 paramedics and police officers (together with 7 dogs!) to common situations they may encounter while working with dogs from the Canine Unit. The 2 groups commonly work side by side, and want to be prepared should any of the 15 dogs from the Ottawa Canine Unit become injured in the line of duty.

Dr. Dearden delivered a lecture that touched on several topics, including canine behavior, common emergency situations, canine restraint, and canine medical conditions that would most frequently be seen by the team. Small group demonstrations included restraint, handling and bandaging of wounds on different areas of the dog’s body.

It was a successful morning for all. Thanks to veterinary technicians JoAnne, Erin, Amber, Jess and Mel for their expertise and demonstration skills with the canines! Thanks also to Ottawa Paramedics, Ottawa Canine Unit, representatives from the RCMP and Belleville Police Force for inviting us. We look forward to working with you again soon.

We raised $182 for Under My Wing Pug Rescue with our doggy treat basket raffle. We watched the pug parade and got lots of kisses and wags from our pug friends. Thanks to Under My Wing pug rescue for having us, we had a great day!
